Color Theory
What is Color Theory?
Color Theory is the study of how colors interact and how they affect human perception. In UI/UX design, it defines the rules for creating a site's palette, including: primary colors, secondary colors, accent colors, and contrast.
Why Color Theory Matters in Design?
The purposeful application of color is fundamental to establishing Brand Identity and directing user behavior.
- Visual Hierarchy: Contrasting colors draw the eye, making the most important elements (like a primary CTA) stand out.
- Psychology: Colors evoke emotion (e.g., blue for trust/enterprise, green for growth/action) and are essential for aligning the website's tone with the User Persona.
- Accessibility: Following proper color contrast rules is a non-negotiable requirement for meeting WCAG standards.
Example from Flowtrix Projects
Our Figma design phase starts with refining the client's Color Theory to optimize for conversion. We select an accent color that provides maximum contrast against the primary colors, ensuring the CTA buttons have an immediate visual impact. This focused approach uses color not just for aesthetics, but as a strategic tool to improve Visual Hierarchy and achieve Accessibility compliance.
