What is Alt Text?

Alt Text (Alternative Text) is a brief, written description of an image on a webpage. This text does not appear visually on the page itself but is embedded in the HTML code and is read by screen readers or displayed if the image fails to load.

Why Alt Text Matters in SEO and Accessibility?

Alt Text serves two distinct, highly important functions for any modern website.

  • Web Accessibility (A11y): It allows visually impaired users using screen readers to understand the context and meaning of the images on your site, which is crucial for ADA compliance.
  • Image SEO: Search engine bots cannot "see" images. Alt Text tells Google what the image is about, helping your site rank in Google Images and providing context to the page's overall topic.
  • Failsafe UX: If a user has a slow connection and the image breaks, the Alt Text ensures they still understand what was supposed to be there.

Example from Flowtrix Projects

During our SEO & AEO Optimization service, Flowtrix audits all visual assets. Instead of leaving a file named IMG_9942.jpg, we add descriptive Alt Text like SaaS analytics dashboard showing monthly recurring revenue growth, which boosts both accessibility and keyword relevance.
