What is Lazy Loading?
Lazy Loading is a performance optimization technique that delays the loading of non-critical resources (like images and videos) until they\'re actually needed—typically when they\'re about to enter the user\'s viewport. This reduces initial page load time and saves bandwidth for users who don\'t scroll to see all content.
Lazy loading is one of the most effective performance optimizations for image-heavy websites.
- Viewport-Based Loading: Images below the fold aren\'t loaded until the user scrolls to them. If a user leaves the page before scrolling down, those images never download, saving bandwidth and loading time.
- Core Web Vitals Impact: By loading fewer resources upfront, lazy loading improves Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), both critical Google ranking factors.
- Bandwidth Savings: For users on slow mobile connections, not loading unseen images is a massive win. A 10-image gallery loads only 2-3 images instead of all 10.
